1989- The Old Country Buffet celebrated its grand opening at Southern Plaza, 4200 S. East St. On hand for the event were (in no particular order) Sean Vincent, Christina Morrison, LaDonna Warman, John Slazas, Evan Gilmore, Randy Serafini, Vern Vincent, Mark Wilson, Lyman Hall and district manager Ken Pabst.

John Brooks opened John’s Sunoco Service at 3900 S. East St. As part of his grand-opening celebration he gave away four glass tumblers to every customer who purchased 10 or more gallons of gas.

The Golden Drive-In Restaurant, 3225 Shelby St., served a whole broasted chicken for $1.65 on Wednesdays.   
* * *
Kay’s Dairy bar opened at 1414 S. Meridian St., and advertised half-gallons of milk for 27 cents; a gallon was 49 cents.

Billy Walker and The Tennessee Walkers of Grand Ole Opry fame were performing at Garfield Park.

Southport High School Pam Dravis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward L. Dravis, was named queen of the Indy 200 at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

William A. “Bill” Bright, assistant professor of education at Indiana Central College, was named the school’s associate director of education. He also served as head baseball and cross-country coach and assistant basketball coach.

Heavy rain flooded the baseball diamonds at the Edgewood Little League Association and caused more than $15,000 in damage.

Jeff Daniels, Kyle Nickander and Gary Hendrickson played on the Indiana AAU junior basketball team (11- and 12-year-olds) that won the Olympic tournament in Kansas City, Mo.

Thanks to a program funded by the Central Indiana Council on Aging, Perry Senior Services was able to serve lunch to Perry Township residents age 60 and over for $2 weekdays at the Southport Community Center.

Steve Davis was named interim chief of the Southport Police Department by Mayor Rob Thoman, filling the position vacated by Duane Burgess.
* * *
Indiana’s high school football season kicked off with defending Class 5A champ Center Grove defeating Perry Meridian 32-0. Roncalli knocked off Southport 21-13, and Beech Grove downed Lutheran 25-19 in overtime.

Center Grove High School’s fans exploded as the Trojans scored a touchdown against Roncalli in the first quarter at the RCA Dome. Unfortunately for Center Grove, the thrill was short-lived as the Rebels went on to win 21-7.

Perry Township Schools named Perry Meridian High School math teacher Allen Boehm as its Educator of the Year. Allen previously coached the boys and girls tennis teams for 18 years.  

10 Years Ago This Week - 2009

The eighth annual Kristi’s Games took place at Lutheran High. The event was held in honor of Kristi Schultz Broughton, a cheerleading coach and kindergarten teacher who was killed by a drunken driver in 2001.

Sharon Roberts and Dakoda and Shelley Johnson manned the Sticky Fingers concession stand at WAMM (wine, art, music and microbrew) fest in Greenwood. Dakoda, a junior at Center Grove High School, started the business to earn money so he could attend diving camps.

Joe Wyatt (left), minister of Whiteland United Methodist Church, helped launch Under the Sun Cafe, which donated all of its profits to local charities. The restaurant served sandwiches, salads, soups and pastries and featured live music.

The bride, a graduate of Indiana University School of Nursing, was a registered nurse at St. Vincent’s Hospital. The groom, a graduate of Purdue University School of Engineering, was self-employed. Missi Brooke served as maid of honor, Scott Mohr as best man.

Judy Hoffman, chairwoman of the Southport Lions Club, presented the group’s Perry Township Citizenship Award to Southport High School Principal Larry Hensley-Marschand.

The Southside sky and the hearts of many local residents were darkened as the former Bemis Bag factory on Barth Avenue went up in flames. Damages were estimated at more than $300,000, and the main structure would likely be demolished. Four youths were charged with arson and were in the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center.

​Yours truly penned a column about St. Roch teacher Dick Gallamore turning 40 and being named WRTV’s Educator of the Week. I recalled an event during his first year at the school. Fellow classmates Randy Kristle, Tom Kersey, Timmy Meyer, Ricky Stumpf and myself started a repeating chant of “Gallamore wants a moon!” during morning recess. Dick didn’t think it was as funny as we did and made us write 1,000 times that “Gallamore doesn’t want a moon.” He was and still is one helluva teacher.

​Boyden’s Bakery, 3953 S. Meridian St., celebrated its 79th anniversary. The first Boyden store opened in 1932 on New York Street, and there were nine across the city in the 1940s and ‘50s. Owned by fourth-generation baker Paula Boyden, right, the Southside site was the lone remaining store.
