Russell “Bud” and Billie Harrell were pictured with the sailfish that Bud caught while vacationing in Acapulco, Mexico.

“Life” magazine celebrated its 20th anniversary. To print an average issue, 8 million pounds of paper and 200,000 pounds of ink were required. The staff included 35 photographers, 70 reporters and 43 editors.

Zuckerberg’s, the popular clothing and shoe store located at 1001 S. Meridian St., announced that it would remain open until 8 p.m. Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays for the convenience of Christmas shoppers.

Meridian Appliance & Furniture, 1117 Prospect St., didn’t require a down payment on its 21-inch Admiral TV. Payments on the $188.88 set were $2.28 weekly.

Roncalli football players Chad Huck, Jeff Jourdan, Tim Dant and Steve Stevason were named to The Indianapolis News’ All-City team. Huck, Stevason, Jourdan and Jack Hawkins were also named to The Indianapolis Star’s All-City team. All five were named All-State by The Associated Press and United Press International.

Ruby and Larry Larmer opened a variety store in Fountain Square. The shop carried handbags, billfolds, watches, rings, toys and tools.

Perry Township firefighters Willis Deardorff, Andy Borton, Jeff Shatto, David Gammon, Kevin Harmon, Rick Stephens, Paul Sergi, Dale Meredith, Tracy Wood, Tony Keeler, Boyce Freese and William Callahan completed an intensive training program at the Indianapolis Police and Fire Academy on Post Road.

Roncalli’s boys basketball team was prepared to open its season against Tech. Indiana police detectives were searching for the man who robbed the Fifth Third Bank at 4202 S. East St. twice within a three-week period.

Christmas trains at Whitewater Valley Railroad were operating on weekends. Trains departed the Connersville station and traveled to Metamora, a restored canal town with a working grist mill, restaurants and more than 100 shops. The cost was $6.25 per child, $12.50 per adult.

The Indiana State Fairgrounds’ Christmas extravaganza featured more than 5 million lights in themed displays. 
* * *
Opening night was just around the corner for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Ameritech’s “Yuletide Celebration,” which featured the ISO performing Christmas favorites and classical selections.

Ochiltree Cleaners had a 22-14 record in the St. Catherine Bowling League and held a half-game lead over the Garfield Barber Shop and Suding Hardware, both 21-15. Don Allen bowled the top game – a 223 –  and series of the week – a 606.

Bixler Appliances, 3322 Madison Ave., was holding a Christmas appreciation sale. Hotpoint automatic washers and Big Bin refrigerators cost $154.88 and $188.88, respectively, with trade-ins. Hotpoint mobile dishwashers were advertised for $199.95.

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1966
Mrs. Charles Rathz won a 25-inch color TV in a raffle hosted by the Sacred Heart High School Alumni Association.

Hill Bros. in Fountain Square advertised women’s and children’s shoes for $1.59 a pair. Nylon hose were 29 cents a pair.

Safeway Quality Foods, 1202 Prospect St., was holding a meat sale. Cube, sirloin and porterhouse steaks were 89 cents, 99 cents and $1.19 a pound, respectively.

Imperial Freezer Meats, 1449 W. Troy Ave., was also conducting a meat sale by offering beef sides for 39 cents a pound.

The Suburban Multi-T-List Exchange named Bob Haggard, who had sold in excess of $1 million worth of real estate for Tomorrow Realty, as its Salesman of the Year.

Construction was underway on A.O. Diaz and Co.’s new real estate office at 9300 S. Meridian St. Posing for a picture in front of the building were Dale Deerberg, Milly Diaz, Mack McCall, Bob Lane and Mike Baxter.

The R.H. Marlin & Co. basketball team in Baxter YMCA’s girls league completed its season with a 12-0 record. The squad featured Becky Austin, Nancy Hague, Sandy Spears, Janae Wilson, Andrea Burgess, Lesa Jensen, Darla Wells, Stephanie Roark and coach Earline Spears.

Southsiders Helen Hare, Marjorie Nackenhorst, George Strack and Garry Wright were among the 25 Indianapolis residents who received the Mayor’s Volunteer Partnership Awards. All the winners were cited for their unselfish service to others.

Joe Wohlhieter III, son of Joe Jr. and Shelli Wohlieter and an honor student at Southport Middle School, was performing in Butler University’s production of “The Nutcracker” for the third year in a row.

Builder Mike Gorman was honored by Catholic Social Services for his volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity, for which he supervised the construction of five homes over the past five years.

St. Barnabas Grade School’s Drama Club wrote, produced and performed “Big Bill” and “Sleeping Beauty.” Students involved in the productions were Eric Rolfsen, Bri Campbell, Lindsey Sahm, Kate Shnell, Jodi Bradley, Adrienne Campbell, Jason Harm, Michael Kocker, Colleen Harrington, Amanda Kelley and Kevin Trulock.

University of Indianapolis senior and Roncalli graduate Susie Kuntz was named to the Great Lakes Valley All-Conference volleyball team for the second consecutive year. Dan Jester, a tight end for UIndy’s football squad, was named to Kodak’s All-American team.

Plans for a new IPS elementary school to replace Schools 31 and 35 were unveiled. The facility would face Lincoln and Minnesota streets at Kennington Street, just west of East Street. Construction on the $8 million building was expected to begin in early 1987

Doug DeJong, Jennifer Hall, Debbie Snider, Kevin Stender, Angie Dill and Robert Hillard, all members of the Perry Township Swimming Association, turned in fine performances during a meet in West Lafayette.

Bill Kuntz was retiring as Roncalli’s football coach so he could enter private business. He compiled a record of 64-18 over seven years and led the Rebels to the Class 3A title in 1985.

Lisa Dillman, who led Perry Meridian’s volleyball team to a 34-2 record and a semistate championship, was named to a variety of All-State teams and was presented with the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s Mental Attitude Award.

Indiana Central College President I. Lynd Esch was elected president of University Heights Hospital’s board of directors. Wallace Sims was named president, Dr. John Butler, vice president, and Wayne Etter, treasurer.

Also in the play were Rich Biggers, Hedy Atkins-Harris, Brent Williams, Sheila Brewer, Joe Clemans, Shellie Miller, Kirsten Ableson, Mandy Potter, Gus Feltes, Paul Smith and Scott Epperson.

Jimmy McDaniels played the piano Monday through Saturday nights at the Driftwood Lounge, 3512 Madison Ave. (Editor’s note: Teenagers loved the place because it was known for serving minors.)

The Indiana State Employment Service advertised the following jobs: concrete brick mason, $6 an hour; diesel engine mechanic, $5 an hour; neighborhood coordinator, $8,000 annually; sales associate, $800 a month plus commission; and keypunch operator; $143 a week.

We have been told by qualified men in the industry that Mr. Liquor (which featured automatic doors) is the outstanding store of its type in Indiana. We give the Southside the largest, most complete stock of whiskies, wines, champagnes and cold beer.”

Coached by Mike Armstrong and led by Miss Basketball candidate Katie Douglas, Perry Meridian’s No. 1 basketball team defeated No. 4 Center Grove 62-61 before 7,100 screaming fans in the opening round of semistate action at Southport Fieldhouse. However, the victory was short-lived as the Falcons lost to Martinsville in that evening’s championship game.

The Memories Band’s farewell performance was going to be held at Primo Banquet Hall, 2615 E. Thompson. The band, which started playing in 1977, was hoping to unite as many former members as possible for the concert. Tickets cost $25 and included a buffet.

Powerlifters Roger and Robin Heldman – probably the strongest couple in the Midwest on a pound-per-pound basis – were featured in yours truly’s “Mohr ... or Less” column. Roger had squatted more than 640 pounds, deadlifted 530 and bench pressed 400. Robin, named the 1996 Female Athlete of the Year by the Natural Athlete Strength Association, had squatted 281 pounds, deadlifted 325 and bench pressed 168.

The University of Indianapolis named Bill Green as its basketball coach. Green, a graduate of Manual High School, had previously coached at Sacred Heart, Cathedral, Washington and Marion high schools, compiling a 354-126 record while winning six state titles at Marion. He succeeded Billy Keller, who went 83-107 over seven years.

The Harry A. Sharp Co. was celebrating the grand opening of its Ford dealership at 3110 Madison Ave. The staff included Homer Archer, W.H. Russel, Tom Roush, Bob Orme, W.R. Cheek and Byron Stitzer. “We aren’t giving away any prizes,” Russel said, “but we are going to make any prospective car buyer real happy when he find outs what a deal he can get.”

The lead story started out like this: “Man! Stand back – way back – cause Saturday from 1 to 3:30 o’clock at Charlie Bell’s TV and Hi-Fi Shop, 2741-43 Brill Road, there’s going to be a big, busy time! The famous recording stars – The Hilltoppers – will be at Bell’s in person to autograph all purchases of their albums. Present plans call for the song stylists to do a number or two for the crowd during their visit.”

Mary Kay Williams was named editor-in-chief of Southport High School’s 1956-57 yearbook, the “Anchor,” which cost $2. Co-editors were Mary Nelick and Nancy Schloemer; Frank Williams and John Maudlin were the sports editors, and Dick Crafton and Steve Maudlin were in charge of advertising. The Fountain Square Senior Citizens Center was hosting a fundraiser to ease its financial woes. The center was looking to secure $5,000 in donations, of which $1,173 had been raised. A donors list indicated that Janie Walker, Dixie Solaine and Juanita Vandivier had contributed $1 each.
